Berberis thunbergii

Japanese Barberry is a plant that encroaches upon much of the remaining habitat of native flora and is a major host for ticks. What I see is that much of the havoc that the white-tailed deer are commonly blamed for is more attributable to the presence of this plant. More research is needed and while thorough manual removal is difficult convincing, Scott M does a good job of this the blog linked here.
